The Townsite 7800 Sour Saison Is The Right Kind Of Strange To Get At

We took a little trip along the Powell River up to Townsite Brewing for EP31 of BORP. This time around we checked out one from their sour series, the 7800 Saison. Townsite is unique among BC breweries in that they are the only one to have a brew master from Belgium; with that, the 7800 is a cheeky ode to the distance as the cuckoo flies from Belgium to BC. The idea of a Belgium influenced sour saison seemed pretty intriguing. Also of interest is that the beer uses, among others, Columbus hops (sometimes called Columbus-Tomahawk-Zeus hops, or CTZ, it’s a long story). These CTZ hops tend to be herbal and with lemon aromas, often used in American style lagers and pilsners; not exactly expected for a sour saison. It actually had a really nice and sharp green apple nose to it. The sour content mixing with a saison style beer gave a subtle, complex concoction of orange, bubble gum and brine. If all of this sounds a little strange, this is true! But we really liked it all the same. If you feel like getting weird, try hunting one of these down.
